Mindfulness Meditation for Beginners

Mindfulness meditation is an approach and has become very popular in the last 10+ years having reached mainstream recognition. Mindfulness re-branded traditional eastern philosophy for the modern world. Because it sits midway between meditation and therapy it has wide appeal.

There are three key parts to the mindfulness approach:

  1. Intentional awareness
  2. Being non-judgemental
  3. Focused in the present moment

Are There Problems With Mindfulness Meditation?

Below Mark shares his many years of experience teaching and practising meditation. Many of his students have studied mindfulness before learning more advanced forms of meditation including light based spiritual meditation. He has found the following to be true in many cases and provides this information to help guide people. However as you will see in his videos and articles, he always promotes that people trust their own experiences and advocates beginners trying different forms of meditation so that they have a broader experience to draw upon.

There are some benefits for beginners learning mindfulness and for this reason he provides the information and videos above to help you. With that in “mind”, it is a wise person who is mindful of the potential pitfalls of any approach:

Mindfulness is a mind-based approach to meditation. Aspects of it, such as being non-judgmental and in-the-moment are beneficial, but it also promotes remaining aware within the mind and over time may actually strengthen the mind-connection, which is the opposite of what you want in meditation.
Mindfulness is based on an approach to the mind’s nature so cannot reveal anything beyond the mind. It is helpful without leading to spiritual growth, rather just explores what is already there. Like many mind-based approaches including TM, that which is in the mind cannot reveal beyond the mind.
Mindfulness meditation brings peace and calm, but because the nature of the mind is habitual lots of mindfulness practice can make it harder to explore more advanced forms of meditation. People who do a lot of mindfulness sometimes struggle with other forms of meditation.

Similarities with The Virtues?

You may have observed that one of the principles of mindfulness is “non-judgement” of your mind and your experience of things, including meditation. This is also one of The Six Virtues which sit at the core of The Way Back teaching and for this reason we include mindfulness as an exercise in our beginners online meditation course. But The Six Virtues run a lot deeper than this, however it is a nice way of exploring one of them within the context of meditation.
